TEACHING OF PHONICS AND READING
“Letters and Sounds” is our main programme for the teaching of phonics. We also blend in the “Jolly Phonics” approach. Whilst the main phonics programme is taught across FS2, Year 1 and Year 2, some children across Years 3 to 6 will continue to have phonics support should the need be identified.
Our Key Stage 2 children follow the spelling programme outlined in the new National Curriculum alongside the “Violet Brand” scheme.
We ask our parents to support their children every day with their spelling homework.
We encourage the love of reading in our school. Children will initially follow the GINN reading scheme with a blend of Rigby Rocket. Initial words linked to the scheme will be sent home in a learning wallet for parents to work on with their child.
Once our children have completed the scheme, they will journey through graded free readers. Reading is taught through a variety of vehicles in our school, including in class with teachers and 1:1 work with Teaching Assistants.
We ask our families to read with their children every day.

Within our mixed year group classes, we closely follow the new National Curriculum. This means that for English and Maths, for example, the children will work towards achieving the end of year expectations for their year group. In other subjects they will work towards achieving the end of Key Stage expectations appropriate to their age. This is why children of the same year group but in different classes will be studying different topics yet they will still be working on developing the relevant skills.
For more information about the curriculum, please ask your child’s teacher.
